Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane disagreed on the third player in their top three currently playing in the Premier League.
Having endured the truly terrible 1-1 draw between Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa on Monday night, Keane and Carragher were asked about their current top three Premier League players, among other things, on Sky Sports.
They both selected Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland from Manchester City but opted for players from their former clubs as their third picks.
“[Kevin] De Bruyne, Haaland and [Cristiano] Ronaldo,” Keane said. “De Bruyne, obviously I played in midfield and what he does week in week out consistently is fantastic.
“We’ve seen what Haaland has done already but obviously he’s new to the Premiership – amazing to see what he can achieve in the next few years, particularly playing with a really good team like City and obviously working with Pep [Guardiola].
“You have to get Ronaldo credit with last night, scoring 700 goals in his career – amazing,” Keane added.
Carragher was predictably in disagreement that Ronaldo is among the three best in the Premier League, instead making his own bold selection from Liverpool.
“Kevin De Bruyne I think has been the best player in the league for four or five years, you’ve got to say Haaland now he is an absolute global superstar and despite his form this season I’m going to still say Virgil van Dijk.
“I think he’s been absolutely amazing over the last four or five years and transforming Liverpool from where they were when he came in to where they’ve been the last few years.”
Van Dijk’s form has been questioned for the first time in his Liverpool career in recent weeks, with his dodgy displays coinciding with the slump of his team, who now sit tenth in the table with just ten points from eight games.
